What is APTT?
- Purpose: The APTT test measures the time it takes for a clot to form in a blood sample after reagents are added.
- Function: It assesses the integrity of the intrinsic and common coagulation pathways, which involve factors VIII, IX, XI, and XII, as well as common pathway factors like I (fibrinogen), II (prothrombin), V, and X.
Why is the APTT Test Done?
- Diagnosis: Helps diagnose bleeding disorders and conditions that affect blood clotting, such as hemophilia and von Willebrand disease.
- Monitoring: Monitors the effectiveness of anticoagulant therapy, particularly with medications like heparin.
- Pre-Surgical Screening: Assesses clotting function before surgeries to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding.
When Should You Get an APTT Test?
- Unexplained Bleeding: If you have symptoms of excessive or unexplained bleeding, such as frequent nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, or easy bruising.
- Clotting Disorders: If you have a known or suspected clotting disorder, or a family history of such conditions.
- Anticoagulant Therapy: If you are on anticoagulant therapy (e.g., heparin) and need regular monitoring to ensure the correct dosage.
